Network Security Trial

Last updated on 2011-03-25 10:51:04

The TalkTalk Network Security Trial will help to test the latest network-based security offering TalkTalk is developing for its customers.

See Frequently Asked Questions on how the trial will be managed, including how to apply and what Labs would like you to do to be involved.

At present in the UK, consumer security software (for example, antivirus / parental control applications) typically needs to be loaded onto PCs to protect the individual device. TalkTalk intends to develop a more comprehensive security offering, providing traditional desktop protection alongside the new web-based service, protecting all devices which access the internet via the home connection, as well as PCs/laptops inside and outside the home.

Deploying such security technology in an ISP's network to protect internet browsing is a first for the UK.

Once the customer has opted-in to the new TalkTalk service, if they attempt to access a webpage previously identified as a threat, or included in the Parental Controls block category, an alert will be displayed, and information will be provided on-screen. If the customer still wishes to proceed, they can make changes to the service in My Account to allow this page to load.

We are looking for 150 existing TalkTalk broadband customers to take part. You will need to already have a "My Account" login or being willing to sign up for "My Account" (which is free) to be a part of the trial.

TalkTalk Labs are offering prizes to 10 lucky trialists!

To be eligible for the draw you must complete the trial (actively participating by submitting feedback on the tasks requested during the trial) and also complete the online surveys. At the end of the trial all the eligible trialists' names will be put into "a virtual hat" and winners drawn at random.

The prizes are:

1st Prize - Apple iPod Touch 32GB

5 Winners of a £20 Amazon Voucher

4 Winners of a £10 Amazon Voucher

Competition Terms and Conditions apply

The aim of the trial is simply to test the new service works for customers in a logical and easy-to-understand way, and provides a good overall experience.

This trial will focus on two critical areas of testing:

First to be tested will be safer browsing technology (Virus Alerts) which TalkTalk is placing in its own network to give customers a choice to receive alerts of online threats (viruses or other malicious programs attached to websites or adverts) as they browse using any internet-enabled device connected to their home TalkTalk Broadband network.

Second to be tested will be Kids Safe and Homework Time, which will enable customers to create a block on certain types of web content so that no device connected to the home broadband network will be able to access this content.
